Technology Training – Course Outline

Computer Literacy for Seniors

Purpose: These course are designed for seniors to learn how to use:

  1. The Internet to look up websites, search for information and read news online, use email and social media (Youtube and Facebook), keep notes, play games, etc., and
  2. Smartphone and iPad/Android tablets.

Courses in two hour modules – See the course outlines below:

  1. Module 1: Computer, Internet and Email
  2. Module 2: Social Media (Youtube & Facebook)
  3. Module 3: Using the power of a Smartphone
  4. Module 4: Using a Tablet (iPad or Android Tablet)

Mode of delivery: The training will be hands-on. That is, the participants will do exercises on a laptop, smartphone, iPad, and Android Tablet while the trainer will demonstrate on his equipment and project the laptop screen at the front of the class. Questions are encouraged.

Audience: The technology training classes are available to seniors across Ottawa registered in the NCR Seniors Directory.

Equipment: Please bring your own equipment (laptop, smartphone, iPad/Android tablet) to the class. Three laptops are available for shared use in the class — for up to six participants who do not have their own laptop.

Prerequisite (what knowledge you should have for this class): You should be able to operate the equipment, and perform basic functions such as:

  1. Turn on the computer, and enter your user name and password.
  2. Use the mouse to point and click.
  3. Open the Browser [Internet Explorer, Chrome, or Firefox, or any other] and type a web address.
  4. Type even with one finger.

Volunteers: If anyone is interested in volunteering to assist the class, please let us know.

Module #1: Internet & Email Training – Two Hours

  • General overview of how to use a computer
  • Internet – what it is and how to access it
  • Searching for information and browsing
  • Opening up websites and browsing
  • News reading online
  • Email – opening an email account on Gmail/Yahoo
  • Email – Reading email, Reply & Forward
  • Email – Address Book
  • Email – Attachments (Open and read, save)
  • Email – Delete emails

Module #2: Social Media (Youtube & Facebook) – Two Hours

  • Youtube – Searching for and watching videos
  • Facebook

Module #3: Using a Smartphone – Two Hours

  • Functions of a smartphone – Phone, Messaging, Data, Games, Music
  • Security – Locking and unlocking the phone
  • Using Phone
    • Contact list / Favourites
    • Speed dialing / Emergency dialing
    • Dialing/redialing a number
    • Minding usage (minutes, airtime, incoming vs outgoing calls, long distance)
  • Using Messaging
  • Using Data
    • Capacity limitation / Data usage
    • WiFi / Bluetooth connection
    • Whatsapp
    • Browser
  • Apps
    • How to find, install and use an app
    • Games apps
    • Music apps
    • News apps

Module #4: Using a Tablet (iPad/Android) – Two Hours

  • Functions of a tablet – Reading books, videos Phone, Messaging, Data, Games, Music
  • Security – Locking and unlocking the phone
  • Using Messaging
  • Using Data
    • Capacity limitation / Minding data usage
    • WiFi / Bluetooth connection
    • Whatsapp for chat and calls
    • Facetime / Skype for video chat
    • Browser
  • Apps
    • How to find, install and use an app
    • Games apps
    • Music apps
    • News apps
  • iBooks & Kindle – Reading books on iPad/Android Tablet
